Ffos Las Racecourse Guide
About Ffos Las Racecourse
Ffos Las Racecourse is Wales's newest racing venue, opened in 2009 on a former open-cast mining site near the village of Trimsaran in Carmarthenshire. The course is a left-handed oval of approximately one mile and four furlongs, featuring a modern design with sweeping bends and a well-drained surface that enables racing throughout the year.
Ffos Las hosts approximately twenty meetings annually, staging both flat and National Hunt racing. The modern design and excellent drainage mean the course rarely loses meetings to weather, providing a reliable fixture list that is valuable for trainers and punters alike.
The Track & Course Layout
The track was designed with modern racing standards in mind, featuring wide bends and a good-quality surface that produces fair, competitive racing. The home straight is approximately two and a half furlongs long, giving finishers adequate time to close without unduly penalising front-runners.
The going at Ffos Las tends to ride on the better side of good due to the excellent drainage, even during the Welsh winter. This characteristic can catch out horses accustomed to the softer ground found at nearby Chepstow, and going preferences are worth checking when studying the racecards.
Key Races & The Racing Programme
For racecard analysis, the fair track configuration and good ground conditions are the key factors. The modern design means there is no significant bias towards any particular running style, though horses that handle faster ground tend to have an advantage.
Facilities at Ffos Las are modern and purpose-built, with a comfortable grandstand and well-appointed amenities. The course is accessible from the M4 via the A48 and A484.
Going & Ground Conditions
Ffos Las has established itself as an important part of the Welsh and West Country racing scene since its opening. The reliable surface and fair track make it a useful venue for assessing form, and the competitive racing provides good opportunities for racecard analysis.
The course attracts runners from across Wales and the south-west of England, with several leading trainers using Ffos Las as a stepping stone to bigger targets. For punters, the modern track and consistent conditions mean that form at Ffos Las is generally reliable and translates well to other courses.
