Chepstow Racecourse Guide

About Chepstow Racecourse

Chepstow Racecourse is the principal racing venue in Wales, situated on a hillside overlooking the Severn Estuary near the Welsh border with England. The course is a left-handed undulating track of approximately two miles in circumference, featuring a demanding uphill finish that creates one of the most testing National Hunt courses in Britain.

Chepstow hosts approximately twenty meetings throughout the year, staging both flat and National Hunt racing. The jumps season is the primary focus, with the Welsh Grand National meeting in late December being the course's flagship fixture. The Welsh Grand National itself, run over three miles and five furlongs, is one of the most important staying chases in the calendar and consistently produces memorable racing.

The Track & Course Layout

The Coral Welsh Grand National attracts top-quality staying chasers and has been won by several horses that went on to distinguish themselves at the Cheltenham Festival and other major meetings. The race's position in late December makes it a holiday highlight for racing fans across the country.

The track at Chepstow features significant undulations that add a major stamina dimension to all racing. The uphill finish is particularly demanding, climbing sharply over the final two furlongs and finding out horses that do not genuinely stay their trip. The fences are well-built and placed on challenging sections of the undulating track, demanding accurate jumping and courage from horse and rider.

Key Races & The Racing Programme

The going at Chepstow can vary considerably, but the Welsh climate means soft or heavy ground is common during the winter months. When conditions are testing, only horses with exceptional stamina and constitution can handle the combination of undulations, heavy going, and the uphill finish.

For racecard analysis at Chepstow, the undulating track, uphill finish, and going conditions are all critical factors. Horses with proven stamina and the ability to handle testing ground are strongly favoured. Paul Nicholls and other leading south-west trainers regularly send quality runners to Chepstow.

Going & Ground Conditions

Facilities at Chepstow are good, with the main grandstand providing excellent views across the course and the Severn Estuary beyond. The course is easily accessible from the M48, near the old Severn Bridge.

Chepstow is Wales's most important racecourse and the Welsh Grand National is the jewel in its crown. The demanding track produces reliable form, and punters who understand the unique challenges of the course can find consistent value in the racecards.
